Relish in the Charm of Yates County’s Agricultural Landscape
Shop fresh produce and handcrafted products from local farmers and artisans at seasonal farm markets, stands, and stores throughout the county. These seasonal farm markets are a hub of activity, with vendors selling everything from freshly picked fruits and vegetables to homemade jams, jellies, and baked goods. You can chat with the farmers who grew the produce, learn about their farming methods, and even get tips on how to prepare and cook the produce you buy. Pick your own produce at one of the county’s u-pick farms, adding an engaging element to the goods you eat. Visiting these markets is not only a great way to support local farmers and artisans but also a fun and memorable experience for visitors of all ages.

Venture out to The Windmill Farm & Craft Market for 175 shops on 44 acres. Beginning over 30 years ago with one man’s dream, a bulldozer, volunteers, a barn raising and selling hot dogs, The Windmill is now a destination for shoppers and even includes six wineries, a brewery and a distillery. Open every Saturday from April-November, it’s an experience unlike any other in the region.

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth with Homemade Goods & Treats
Whether you’re in the mood for a warm slice of apple pie or creamy and decadent ice cream, you’ll find plenty of options to satisfy your cravings. There’s certainly no shortage of homemade baked goods in our neighborhoods – from fresh bread and muffins at Blue Heron Bakery from to delectable pies, cookies and cupcakes from Tabora Farm & Winery, your sweet tooth will not be forgotten about. Yates County is also home to two award-winning ice cream and custard stands, Seneca Farms and Spotted Duck (get an ice cream flight with custard made from duck eggs, also awarded “Best Ice Cream in America in a TikTok Challenge), that you certainly don’t want to skip out on during your visit. A visit to the Keuka Candy Emporium is a must for families and adults for a pure old time candy shop experience.

Unravel Yates County’s Past at its Mesmerizing Museums and Historic Sites
Yates County is home to a number of fascinating museums and historic sites that tell the story of the area’s past. One must-visit destination for history buffs is The Oliver House Museum, part of the Yates County History Center. This beautifully preserved property is located in the charming town of Penn Yan and provides visitors with a unique glimpse into life in Yates County during the 19th century. The Center is also home to the the foremost collection of The Public Universal Friend artifacts in the United States, while the the Garrett Memorial Chapel, known as the “Little Chapel on the Mount,” pays tribute to Evelyn and Paul Garrett, who founded and ran Garrett and Company (one of the largest wine producers in the world) from 1902 until 1940. Other notable historical sites include the Keuka Outlet Trail (complete with audio tour), the Downtown Penn Yan Historic District and the Dundee History Center.

Experience the Great Outdoors in Yates County
Yates County is home to a variety of stunning natural landscapes, including the serene Keuka Lake and the rolling hills of the Finger Lakes. Hiking and biking enthusiasts can find much to explore, including the seven miles of lush forests and waterfalls along the Keuka Outlet Trail. The beautiful Keuka Lake is home to a variety of fish species, including bass, trout and perch, making it a popular spot for anglers of all skill levels. Birdwatchers will also find plenty to see in Yates County, with a diverse array of bird species found throughout the region. For a new way to explore the outdoors, visitors can travel along a former railroad track by rail bike with Finger Lakes Rail Riders. The track spans 5 miles roundtrip and takes about 2 hours to traverse, with a guide.

Need somewhere to stay? With multiple campgrounds (and glamping!) offering scenic views and modern amenities, camping in Yates County is a peaceful escape.

Yates County’s Festivals and Events
One of the best ways to experience Yates County is by attending one of the many festivals and events that take place throughout the year. Whether you’re interested in sampling local wines and ciders, browsing handmade crafts, or simply enjoying the fresh outdoor air, there is something for everyone. Yates County is also known for several annual events – Penn Yan Cruisin’ Night, a car show taking place each June; a Farm-To-Table Community Table Dinner, a fall night of amazing food prepared by local chefs, paired with local wines and craft beer while seated around a custom-built communal table situated on the Main St. Bridge in Penn Yan; and StarShine, a holiday celebration full of live music, treats, and of course Santa Claus!
